This is one of our most commonly asked questions, so we thought we'd fill you in on each doodle coat type to help you pick the one that's best for you. Remember, the length and style of your doodle's cut makes a big difference in the look and amount of work required in keeping their coat neat and clean. The shorter the coat, the less maintenance required.
Curly Coats
Perhaps the most popular type of doodle coat- curly coats are a showstopper. When grown out long curly coats can have a more wavy look, or when kept short they look tight and spiralled, much like their poodle parent. Something to be aware of with this coat type is matting. Matting isn't just hard to deal with, but can cause serious damage to your dog's coat and skin. Therefore, it's important to recognize the amount of care this coat requires and ensure that you're up for the commitment. The best way to spot a curly coated pup is to look for curls on their ears and forehead.
Brushing: 3-4 times a week
Cut: 4-6 weeks
Wavy Coats
This coat type is a great middle ground for those looking for less maintenance than a curly coat, while still keeping some playful texture. When kept short, the wavy coat has a loose curl look and when grown long it looks straight and textured. In regards to maintenance, this coat type is a good in-between. Wavy coats can also be known to matt on their torso and behind their ears so be sure to brush out these areas well when grooming. Look for rows of waves on the puppy's ears with a more loose, textured wave on the forehead to spot a wavy coated pup.
Brushing: 2-3 times a week
Cut: 6-8 weeks
Straight Coats
Praised as the lowest maintenance coat type, straight coats are beautiful in their own right. These coats can have a loose wave when kept short but are straight and flowy when grown long. Straight coats are the best for families who love the hair over their eyes look and really accentuate the dog's mustache and eyebrows. A couple perks of the straight coat is that it is the easiest type to keep clean when grown long and it rarely matts. When choosing a straight coated puppy, look for very mild waves to straight hair on the
ears, an obvious mustache and eyebrows
and little to no curl on the forehead.
Brushing:Â 1-2 times a week
Cut: 8-10 weeks
A Note about Unfurnished Doodles or Flat-coated Doodles
This type of doodle does not have furnishings, furnishings are the mustache and eyebrows look that are always inherited from a poodle parent when that parent is a purebred. So an unfurnished doodle does not have the signature doodle look to their face but has shorter, flatter fur. Essentially, an unfurnished doodle's face looks like their non-poodle parent. Unfurnished doodles can have straight or wavy coats, but they are not as recognizably doodles and they will shed. At Golden Acres, we do not produce any unfurnished doodles, these are only produced as a result of breeding a doodle with a doodle, also known as F2 doodles. We don't breed F2s as this creates more unpredictability in size and will reintroduce shedding in the puppies who are unfurnished.Â
