To respond to this question, we thought we'd create a list of products and supplies that we love, with a couple of items that have been recommended by our puppy families as well. If you have any tried and true products or items that you'd recommend feel free to share in the comments below.
We have decided to make our New Puppy Checklist on Amazon, as that is where we get most of our products and find that, for most things, this is where we get the best price. In lue of that, we acknowledge that as an Amazon associate we earn a small commission from the purchases you make through our list. Obviously, there is no pressure from us to use our list specifically or purchase any product that we recommend. This checklist for your new puppy is meant to be a helpful tool for preparing for your pup and if you have any questions about the necessity or reason for any item we'd be happy to answer those. As you'll notice below we have a few extra items that are not available or as affordable on Amazon so don't forget to check those out as well.
Additional Items:
TLC Puppy Food
We recommend purchasing a high quality puppy food. Our brand of choice is TLC Puppy Food. You can check out our blog post "What brand of dog food is best?" for more information and for a link to a discount on TLC puppy food.
Dog Crate
We suggest looking on facebook marketplace or kijiji for a used crate as they are much more affordable than buying new and are relatively easy to find. Most any crate will do, just make sure it is the 42" size. This may seem large, but it's nice to have enough room for a bed, food and water and the space for your dog to turn around if left in the crate while you're out.
Chew Bones
These are a must have for teething puppies! We usually get the little white ones from the Dollarstore. When your pup grabs something you don't want them to chew correct them and replace the item with a chew bone or toy so that they can meet the need to chew while understanding that not everything is for chewing on.
Variety of Treats for Training
We recommend 1 particular type of training treat on our Amazon list as it's our dog's favourite. But using a variety will keep your pup's interest and attention as they never know what they'll get. You can cut up cheese into tiny pieces or use peanut butter as these are both healthy options when used in moderation.
Chew Toys & Squeaky Toys
I recommend buying these in person as it's good to feel the quality and make sure that the toys aren't too small and could be swallowed. Something else to note with squeaky toys is that you should only use them when you are able to supervise your pup as it's not uncommon for dogs to rip the toy open and then choke on the squeaker.
